How did you get the video so smooth? I'm doing the same thing with my GoPro to VLC and the video is very choppy. The video goes to my phones GO Pro app nice and smooth but to VLC it's very jerky. Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot! 🙂
I've waited a long time to see this. Anybody do this with the Sony AS100V?
Works like a carm, Hero2 with wifi-backpack
I am working on a project.
2 of these to make 3D Cam + Oculus Rift on Quadcopter
not sure if you figured it out, but for it to work:
1)open vlc media player and connect to gopro wifi
2)click on open media
3)click on open network stream
4)type in what is on the second last line in the video at 00:1
5)click play.
it may show up the feed for a few secnds and shut off, so play around with it for a while and toggle on and off the loop also.
Try taking out the SD card for live streaming. I have a Go Pro 3 and tried it with the SD card in it, and it crashes after 3 seconds. The url that you enter 10.5.5.9:8080/live/amba.m3u8 points to a menu selection in the camera. Since the cams are designed to take "snap shots, time lapse, high speed(slow motion) and regular video" it doesn't know which stream to provide. Without the SD card it will stick itself into "preview mode", and you will get a stable stream on VLC.

You can actually! I don't know why the creator of this video said you can't. Clearly he doesn't know.
You can easily re-stream this video. It'd be a little clunky, but yeah it can be done. What you need is two network cards (at least one wireless so you can connect to the camera).. You could use zoneminder for the security camera software… but you could also just restream with vlc if you wanted.
THIS DOES WORK on a gopro hero 2 with wifi pack FOR REAL (unstable) but it works!!
This does NOT work on a Gopro Hero2 HD with wifi pack. AT ALL.
Hey Rod, is the stream presented in full HD?
What do you do after you hook up the wifi I could not get on the Internet to download the soft ware
Sadly not. I switched to using a JVC Adixxion action camera which does allow me to stream to the internet (ustream) with just any standard wifi hotspot
If you need more detailed instructions Like, the goprouser forums is a good place to hang out, read and learn more.
Sorry you could not use this to monitor your house from work. The JVC Adixxion Camera would be a good choice if you wanted to do that – Rod
The first set of instructions don't make much sense, could you please elaborate on them? I cant get it to work
This might sound ridiculous, but im not too savvy as i just got my GoPro. Can i set up this camera as a security camera? For example station it somewhere in my house and have the live feed on my computer at work? Sometimes i wonder what my dogs do all day when im not there too hahaha. Thanks! Btw if it matters i have the HD Hero 2 outdoor edition.
Sorry, I don't have a Sony camera to test this with. I would assume not.
It is possible with sony action cam hdr-as15?
about 500ft with not other equipment. If you use wifi repeaters, you can extend that way more.
without dropping signal
whats the maximum distance at 640p you can go ?
I didn't try that.
Its pretty fair for me, to just view what is going on with the camera. Sure I would not use it to capture video.
Resolution is certainly not full HD. Sorry once I initially got it working and made that video, I have not looked since. Maybe someone else has continued the work and found a parameter to change the video quality.
Sure, should work fine with Mac too.
Yeah, I'm rather disapointed, I bought gopro to use for a wireless feature that said would be available. Its still not available really.
Sorry no simple answers for you. If you have any firewall software on your PC, I would suggest you disable that.
Sadly I don't have a Hero3 Black to test with. Do the official apps now available from gopro work for you?
can i do this say, with a hotspot in my pocket and stream to internet the same way?
Im having the same issue that "newthursdaybrand" is experiencing.
Using 10.5.5.109:8080/live/amba.m3u8 the stream plays for 1 second and stops.
I've got the Hero3 Black firmware December 14,2012, with a MacBook Pro 10.7.3, and VLC 2.0.5
I followed the directions and the stream pops up for literally one second then cuts out. Any idea?
This works on the Hero 3 Black Edition too! There is a 3 second delay, but there is sound and the video is smooth.
This is interesting, but low resolution and extreme delay makes the streaming quite useless. GoPro announced FullHD streaming (see the CEO interview) about 9 months ago. All we have now is a small picture with >5 seconds delay. Way to go, GoPro.
can you do this with a mac?
Thank you guys, great tutorial
Can you adjust the resolution of the output? In other words have it show max resolution widescreen on your computer? I understand these record in HD. As such, is it possible to capture that on your computer at that resolution?
Streaming video seems in slow motion and it has a lot of delay.-
It seems useless…
can you hook up a dslr and the gopro hd2 and run them both with VLC?
Sorry, I should have explained better. I meant switch on full HD live view and not record, thus using all the MCU for live transmit.
Thanks again to Johan you can switch on liveview – see forum link in description of this video
Great stuff guys .. Would be great to see GoPro maybe have a switch in their firmware as they do with Protune mode for Liveview mode with no onboard recording .. would totally turn the GoPro into the ultimate camera device. The could have mixed mode for recording and camera setup.
great to see it working,
am super stoked to see what can be done without
thanks for the "collaboration" guys^^
